Salongate

Absolute governments, (though the disgrace of human nature,) have this advantage with them that they are simple; if the people suffer, they know the head from which their suffering springs, know likewise the remedy, and are not bewildered by a variety of causes and curses.  - Thomas Paine

Our HOA president has, in the words of our building manager, "gone rogue". She was a 1 woman show from the start but the owners only just noticed, because she's crossed the line.  She's messed with the Castle's decor and has roused the weary occupants like great trolls that till recently had been stone. No one owns a Castle Green unit or several who isn't obsessed with its aesthetics. Some of us have art degrees, some of us have dollhouses, but we all care.

Marilyn's reign over the homeowners association and seemingly their souls is new, but she isn't new to the castle. She is heir to the Thomas Paine Society, the secret society in the castle's basement. She inherited the society and its offices from one Larry Swartz, described by her as "a great man" and by others who remember as "The Slum Lord". He owned land on what was then the wrong side of the tracks, where according to a 1970s article from the LA Times he rented to the destitute  (primarily those "of color") and performed minimal maintenance. When the opportunity came to replace this neighborhood with the 210 freeway, he sold.

With the money from this sale he bought into the castle, several units. Marilyn first comes into the oral (snicker) history now. Marilyn is an attractive woman now so it's a good bet she was then. The story goes that it was she who encouraged the aging Larry Swartz to found the Thomas Paine Society.

The society was founded in 1994. The LA Times in a 2001 article about Castle Green says this "...Larry Swartz--who died in May--organized the society in honor of the Revolutionary War-era pamphleteer, a crusader for free speech. The society has existed for years--but, as far as anyone can guess, there was no membership roll, and no one ever held a meeting." In other words, the society never held a meeting in his lifetime.

Why the society was founded is a matter of debate. Was it to provide a job for Marilyn? Was it to give the elderly Larry Swartz a sense of accomplishment? Was it a historical front for Marilyn's crusade to legalize Marijuana? Thomas Paine was after all a free thinker. How this ties in specifically with Marijuana I don't know, it's a bit of a stretch.

So what was Marilyn's sway over the alleged slumlord turned champion of political philosophy? I don't know. He was old and she was significantly younger and attractive. The castle holds that she was Larry Swartz's mistress, but in a vision I saw that all that ever happened was she showed him her breasts. I cannot describe her breasts from this vision, nor can I say how it came to me.

Vicious rumors circulated that Marilyn hastened Larry Swartz's death, that he had emphysema and she encouraged him to smoke out. I don't believe there was malicious intent here. I think at most there was merely a failure to connect the dots. With strong beliefs sometimes comes denial. Or perhaps she was an early proponent of Medical Marijuana.

Upon inheriting the society at Larry Swartz's death, Marilyn sold off like silverware his remaining Castle Green units, leaving only the unsalable basement office which is the Thomas Paine Society's office today.

We're brought up to the present day. Until now consigned to the basement, Marilyn came upstairs and into her own when our building manager, Feb, recruited her for the board. Feb may have known better, but she forgot in eagerness to put the board in strong hands, hands that could wrest the bi-annual tour away from the Friends of Castle Green. Feb had grown attached to the tour and wanted to run it free of its founders' interference.

Marilyn was elected board president by its new, weak, and skyping members. The story has it she appointed herself then assigned treasurer, secretary and vice president like choosing a team. As Feb had hoped, she successfully wrestled tour away from the Friends of Castle Green, but then she didn't stop.

The funny things is I believe Marilyn loves the castle, she's come up from the basement to the tree trimming party every Christmas since I've been here, but now officially raised from the basement she could not be vanquished.

When she came on the board money had already been committed to sprinkler installation (due to the fire department's mafia like grip on the castle). On Feb's advice, Marilyn promoted the event office's administrative assistant to sprinkler installation management. Installation was done wrong and needed to be redone. It goes on to this day.

Outside our door, once the location of an antique cornice.
Next Marilyn focused on the wedding business, elevating it to primary recipient of the castle's remaining cash. She meant well, she told us at a board meeting that she was doing it for us. Whoring out our home as a wedding venue is a long castle tradition, not her invention. But she grew greedy.

She attempted to restrict residents’ use of the 1st floor when the wedding planner mentioned they were a distraction to potential brides.  It was about this time the young Victorian, who was serving as treasurer, began to question the board’s financial reports. Disagreeing with them, he offered his own, slipped in the night (or afternoon) under peoples doors. He soon felt Marilyn's wrath.  Having served his purpose on the board (providing Victorian credentials for the takeover of tour) she no longer needed him and initiated his recall. The recall was successful. With the newest member gone, only the weak and skyping members of the board were left and they seconded everything she said. I watched them do it.

Then it happened. She decided to make the castle "sparkle" (true words leaked to me 3rd hand).

The board slavishly granted her $50,000 to revamp the castle's first floor to "appeal to the modern bride".  Marilyn, in show, appointed a design committee based on whose findings she would blow the cash. The committee included none of the members of the old architectural committee, but did include the castle's wedding booker and her assistant. The only resident appointed to the committee was on the board and accustomed to seconding whatever Marilyn said, but at the initial design committee meeting she argued against the modernizing agenda. Having tried democracy but finding it necessary to abandon, Marilyn cancelled the next design committee meeting and went shopping. We are now $70,000 deep in modern bridal decor and still shopping.

Too little, too late.
Marilyn had long imagined herself an interior decorator. I found her profile on a decorating site, but it was self listed. But now armed with cash and  a world beyond her basement office, she went to town.

Her purchases:
•    An outdoor set from Target, with coordinating polka dot pillows
•    More bling for the chandelier
•    She went to a "design your own sofa" company, designed and ordered 2 custom polyester couches for the Salon. One broke the first day, to everyone's delight (see picture).
•    Gold painted flocking on the brides and ladies room walls for which the contractor apologized to the residents but said he needed the money.
•    Picture frames from Aaron brothers to replace the antique picture frames in the brides' room
•    A carpet to cover the Victorian tile in the lobby.
•    Sheer ballroom drapes direct from Bed, Bath and Beyond. They don't fit the windows so she hung the bars low. They and the drapes can be seen from outside the castle and appear to be a set of showers curtains.

Caution tape on upside down collapsed Salon sofa.
Then came the hardest blow, in violation of the promise to make no architectural changes to the castle Marilyn struck. No one saw it coming, not other members of the board, not Feb the building manager (I know, I wrote them and asked). She hired a friend of a friend to fix the crack in our ancient ballroom floor. They did a thorough cover up, applying unknown inorganic materials (similar to linoleum) and scraping deep into the castle's original cement between it, to give the impression of tile. Next they airbrushed it with a spotty finish to give it the appearance of age (only it resembles acid washed jeans), next they applied layer upon layer of sealant so the damage would remain in place.

In response to the resulting resident outcry, for finally, Allah be praised, there was one, she had the lines gauged in the original cement camouflaged with a stucco material, which she then had varnished for permanence as well. This is a picture of the "tiles" pre-stucco.

Weep, ye.
The flurry of emails was unprecedented. From the few on-site owners to the off-site owners who could be persuaded to come and look, they mourned the floor like biblical witnesses of old. They begged for a redo, or better yet an undo. They petitioned the city for a stop work order, which was given, but then rescinded when the city concluded the damage was permanent.

Through all this Marilyn bore on. In response to the criticism she responded, "It's a thankless task". I knew already that this was her understanding of the situation, that she was helping us against our stubborn will. When the building manager, an owner herself, rebelled, Marilyn put her in place by threatening her job. Then she bought her off by letting her make her own minimal more tasteful additions to the decor, so Feb is back in her court.

Unhappy residents or bored wedding guests scratched at the gold flocking on the walls. It came off in their fingernails. The polka dot pillows disappeared; I thought Marilyn bent to popular opinion and did it but then she issued a warrant for their return. Missing: ugly pillows. All this happened before I could execute my plan of donating them to Goodwill.

Marilyn blamed the collapsed polyester sofas on the building's residents, sending out a letter proclaiming vandalism and that we would all be made to pay. The response that came back at her was that she was the vandal, she had ruined our castle. Meanwhile in the upstairs hall the antique cornices were removed and wires left dangling, odd since we already passed fire inspection.

A few off site owners couldn't take it anymore and pledged themselves to run for the board. Leif, my husband, pledged himself, an ultimate sacrifice since he doesn't like to talk.

At the same time Marilyn showed her breasts (ok, probably a different inducement was used this time) to others of the owners, convincing them to run for the board as well. Feb, the building manager has established sway over the lazy uninformed owners' votes, but she has her job and her token decorating duties now so we can't count on her to rally the votes against Marilyn.

The polyester sofas are back in the Salon and we refuse to sit on them during the Thursday socials. We put our Pomeranians on the profoundly faux velvet to scratch it with their little toenails. Meanwhile, we wait for the vote.

I cannot tell you how much I love your blog, and how I wish/hope this isn't true, but fear it is. Has anyone contacted Pasadena Heritage? Surely they will rally to your aid.

Polyester? BB&B? In our castle? For it is ours, all of ours. This woman must be stopped.

Either that, or perhaps she'd like to run for City Council in District 3?

I have no standing, but nonetheless register my outrage. I'm so sorry about the damage to the castle.

Also, I've long wondered about the Thomas Paine Society (having once wrongly confused it with the Theodore Payne Society.)

Barbara,

Thank you for your condolences. I don't seem to have any standing either. I'm pretty sure the board is sick of my polite letters. If you'd like to send one of your own as a concerned local citizen, you can address it to:

As far as your confusion, it's totally understandable. Both societies have shown an interest in native plants. : )

Petrea,

Some of the story is conjecture, but the damage isn't.

Unfortunately Pasadena Heritage has no control over non-architectural changes such as blowing the castles budget, earned largely from events and tours, on ugly modern decor. As far as architectural changes (2 f'd up floors and an abundance of holes in the wall for the non-fitting drapes), they appear to have ruled it damage done. I still think it would be worth writing them and expressing concern.

To those who have rightful concern:
I can state the truths that have been left out concerning the Ball Room floor and the Bride Room boudoir.
The concrete paved floor in question was a very necessary structural repair. The concrete and steel mesh panels rocked apon walking on them. The flooring had to be secured from below and sealed of the natural settlement cracks that accrued through the floors an hundred twelve year existence. The sealant was a leveler to the floor and the unsightly cracks were cleaned out of dirt and filled with an epoxy appropriate to this usage. All the work being done by a bonded professional. Now the floor can be carpeted as it had been originally in Axsminster carpet made in England at that time. The sub flooring had to be attended to in order to lay carpet in future.

The Bride Room boudoir was and has always been off limits to the residences. It is a culled out grouping of 'funny' spaces turned boudoir/dressing room bathroom intended singularly for the Bride and her Bride maids. It's kept locked and is sometimes used as a cellaret.

I believe Rebecca in her blog means well. I believe she wishes justice in all she depicts in cartoon form. I also believe she is being used by some who do not care for Rebecca's best interest. I find Rebecca's blog very entertaining. And there is the it's Theme; entertainment with an Irm Balmbeck twist, though the later wasn't at'l snarky nor nefarious. I am not a Doctor, but I dare say there are several Alcoholic personalities dwelling within the Castle walls who are experts at that mastery skill of "Triangulation", in order to self feed a sad and lonesome form of attention.

There is a Quaker proverb:

Is it true?
Is it kind?
Is it necessary?

beckynot said...

I respect David Bell's opinion and his work, he did a really beautiful mural some years ago for the 7th floor ceiling and I've seen photos of his other work.

I do think however his work relationship with the building requires his having a more positive outlook on the recent changes, some of which he was hired for. Mr. Bell installed the gold/green flocking in the brides' room and ladies' room, but he didn't pick it and I don't think it's what he would have chosen. He's right that that area is primarily used by brides but it's also our handicap access bathroom and the ladies' room is used by Castle residents and guests alike. More importantly, we OWN the castle and the owners did not approve the changes, they were the decisions of 1 woman.

As far as the floor, I wish Mr. Bell had been hired to work on it. I think it would have been very different. His recommendation for it was an area carpet, which would would have been true to the period and hidden the crack from wedding guests. The ballroom floor didn't have to be touched. The building had received no citations for it nor was anyone in danger. It hasn't been repaired. It's been ground down and covered up.

The other Anonymous person should watch there tongue if they don't want to be sued, going against claims of being abused and mentally unstable can easily be sued for libel.

Regarding the ballroom floor; it was decided by ONE woman with no decision from the owners in regard to what was being done. I'm sorry but using spray paint to do the floor is not historically accurate and it makes it look like CRAP! As a resident to this building I am utterly horrified by the lack of concern that has gone into the redecoration of a historic property. All talesofcastlegreen has done is show how incredibly screwed up this building is, and how much it needs to change.

In the end who wants to get a married at what now looks like a cheap hotel!

David,

One of the major issues I have with these matters is that they are not discussed in the legally required manner that is expected of work done by an HOA. It is quite possible that, as you describe, work needed to be done on the ballroom floor, and I did agree with the Chair of the Board, during the first Design Committee meeting, that recoloring it by adding a thin layer on top might be a good idea. However, that sort of decision needs to be made at a Board meeting. Instead, changes have simply been decided upon by a single person, without any authorization. Also, dancing on that floor, we felt no rocking, and no such issues were described by any employee or board member. If there were such structural issues, I'm very concerned that they were apparently hidden from owners. There is, additionally, no plan, to my knowledge, to carpet over the area with historically-appropriate carpet.

On the matter of the "bride's room," it has as of late been open to residents and owners, until the above-mentioned person decided to lock it earlier this month. It is, to my knowledge, a common area per the CC&Rs and page 14 of the Condominium Plan. It is also the only accessible restroom in the building. It is worth noting, as described, that the City of Pasadena did issue a Stop Work Order two weeks ago for the bride's room and ballroom projects.

In any case, I think it right to point out that many of us here have vested interests in the matter. You have interests as a paid contractor for the HOA, who did some of the work for the bride's room, and I have interests in it as an owner.

Belldavid1000 said...

I think it's a beautiful place to get married. I would invite anyone to be married at Castle Green. The owners have nothing to do with the Weddings. Thank Goodness for this fact. They only live above the first floor.
Please put your name on your response so you can be taken seriously. If you really care about your home and your investment as a shareholder, why would you make a fuse over nothing. I am glad the floor is fixed, as I gave the logical reasons why in my last posting. Get involved. Learn to get along with others. Put your energies toward the Cause. Not just for self. Be a Leader. All your hat reds will melt away.

C G Evans said...

David,

Perhaps it is unclear, as I am posting with an account, as you are, but my name is posted on my response as the account name.

It is unclear to me what you mean by getting involved. I have attended every Board meeting since I purchased a unit in the building. I was on the Board for a period of time, until I was recalled by an election that, oddly enough, did not have secret ballots, and am currently a candidate in the upcoming election. I was one of the major organizers of the April tour, which to my knowledge brought in more revenue than any other tour in recent history. I have personally spent thousands supporting the building as a whole, especially during the tour, only to have certain interested parties make insulting and, had they been made publicly, slanderous attacks against me, going so far as to make vague claims of hacking, breach of contract, and other nonsense. Until these attacks, I also worked with the Old Pasadena Management District and Pasadena Convention & Visitors Bureau supporting the building's interests. I was the person who found and explained financial irregularities with the Friends of Castle Green, resulting in their removal from tour operations, and have now been dealing with similar issues involving the HOA itself. I ran the Tour's website, Paypal account, Square account, and website on the Castle Green site, and developed the online payment system that the Castle used, until a particular Board member, without notice, chose to change all passwords and hand everything over to a friend of hers instead. With her changes, the December tour brought in a massively smaller amount of revenue with significantly increased expenses. I now run a site that provides owners and residents with information that the Board is reluctant to provide.

There is quite a bit of intrigue and drama at the Castle, and I fear you may not be entirely apprised of the issues. It is worth noting that over $60,000 was spent on arbitrary changes to the first floor in November and December of last year, entirely on the decision of one person, with no discussion. Where is this opportunity to be involved? Furthermore, around $25,000 was spent in attorneys' fees; presumably much of this was centered around baseless attacks against me, despite my making no legal threats against the HOA. Even simple requests I made for documents were forwarded to high-priced lawyers rather than our management company. Employees you know who have expressed concern about changes have been threatened with firing. A few weeks ago, the Chair of the Board sent a letter claiming that she would file a police report for "vandalism" in response to sofas that broke. I received a letter from our management company around one month ago that described their plans to forcibly enter our units if we didn't comply with sprinkler project access; this was their initial contact on a matter that I have always said I will fully comply with per the CC&Rs. At some points certain Board members have apparently demanded that elevator staff not answer calls from my partner, who they have also said should "be silent" and "speak only through me." The building, I am afraid, is not the same as when you lived in it.

I am quite passionate about the building, and I find it very odd that you'd accuse me of being selfish about the matters without first realizing who I am, though, given many in the building, I can understand. Instead, I think my problem can tend toward my being too concerned and severe about the building rather than my own interests; the building and my unit are not significant investment interests for me, and are instead more hobbies than anything else.

I do know that you've done very good work in the building (something we need to talk to you about in regards to our unit) in the past, and worry that you might not have been fairly informed of all the issues here.

beckynot said...

The first floor, apart from the rented offices, is a common area. It encompasses the ballroom, salons, lobby and elevator.

The weddings have everything to do with the owners. The money raised through events is intended to offset homeowners' fees, because it's our space which we rent out on an event by event basis.

When I respond to comments, I write to all as One. Not to one person. That's what the telephone is for.
I am aware of all the foibles of the Castle are. I too lived there once apon a time. There was always a tug of war, as is in all condominiums. I never took interest in unsolvable. I've always by-passed it and gone on and do my work. "Idle hands are the devil's workshop". If one steps out of oneself and looks inward. It becomes so clear to the outsider, to the point of embarrassing. Similar to hearing oneself on a tape recorder. So too with all this unkindness. Is it really necessary? We ought look at the positive. In this case, each of or own contributions as a group over these long and many years for some of us.
I commend Alaine on a good job. It's not how I'd decorate my own apt. But it's perfectly adequate. It's a version of ones perfection. Interior design is never a joint effort. As any designer. You know, I thought Jacky O. did the best and most beautiful job on her husband's White House. It was mostly destroyed and today only her lower Oval Rm is extant. Nothing lasts for ever forever.
In this case, the right thing was done. Lets move forward and make the best of it. We live in the best of all times, and in the most beautiful so. Californian City. How can you guys be so filled with hatred and woe. We don't live a thousand years you know. Our time left is precious. When I lived at Castle Green, I never even went in the Ballroom, or the Lady's Room for that matter. It would be like Eva Stotesbury spending time in the laundry at Whitemarsh Hall. I think not!

When running a business, a vinilla taste can prevail in the area of decoration. Any Condominium has wars over how to decorate their Lobbies. It's always been this way. Lets face it. Will we ever hear a blog that states: ....and we have the most wonderful decorator in house. We are so fortunate. Everything they touch becomes gorgeous! Yikes! I'm laughing as I write,,, oh Lordy. Now that I've got to the bottom of this blogs Narcissistic intent, due evidently to sour grapes on the part of a numbered few, my posts have made my point. Of course I realize I'm fortunate to live at the castle. I fell in love with it and its downstairs on a tour. I want it to remain the beautiful place I saw.

I'm not gunning for you at all. I appreciate your wit and largely upbeat attitude. I'm not bullying my neighbors. My wife never once insulted you; and indeed, she will never insult you, even now, after you have insulted her. I, however, am not so kind and forgiving as my better half.

I believe all my points were clearly made in all my titled Postings.

Quite the contrary. When I read your postings, my recurring thought is, "Is this guy high?"

It is you who comes across as "uneducated". I can barely comprehend your garbled writing. "Misquote" is one word. (Would a "miss quote" be a quote of a young, unmarried woman?) The word you're looking for is "accurate", not "actuate". You've "gotten to the bottom", not "got to the bottom". "Narcissistic" is not capitalized. "Backbone" is one word. A woman is expected to "take it like a man"? What in hell does it mean to "have been delved sour grapes"? (Before you attempt to use the verb "to delve" again, I suggest you look it up.)

We met you recently in the Grand Salon. You seemed like a nice enough person. But now you have chosen to engage in this smear campaign against my wife. That does not make for good neighbors.

See you in the halls.

You'd better hope I don't see you in the halls.

And, and, I'm glad, of course, that her blog is being discovered by more bloggers, and people! There are too many deserving blogs with too few comments and vice-versa.:)

Oh, what a ripping good yarn. I've already cast half the characters, though almost all of the actors are British and French, so that might be a problem. Fanny Ardent has a cameo, of course. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxLTiBZKW3M

The critical issue here is being muddled by bickering over whether the changes in decor that have been done are an improvement or a detriment. But this is just a distraction from the only important issue here: that these decisions were made and unilaterally implemented by a single person. Whether her decorating ideas were good or not is entirely irrelevant. The point is that she simply hasn't the right to make such decisions on her own. Certainly THAT much can be agreed on, right?

Altadena Hiker,

Wow, she is cool! I was terrified she was going to finish him off.

The only casting decision I've made is based on a couple movies from the 80s. I don't want Winona Ryder as my voice over.

Anon,

The crazy thing is I think I know Marilyn's theory, "There are too many opinions here and no action. I'm going to do it all myself, so at least it gets done."

Additionally, it bothers me that the board stood by and let it happen.
